Our History

Prior to 1972, EMS services for Surry County citizens were provided by local funeral homes.  In 1972, Paramedical Services, Inc. contracted with the County of Surry to provide EMS services to its residents.  It’s services included basic first aid and transportation to nearby hospitals within Surry County.

In 1974, Paramedical Services, Inc filed for bankruptcy and on July 2, 1974, the County began providing EMS services itself.  At that time, Surry County EMS operated with 22 employees working a 24 / 24 shift.  Soon after, employees enrolled in their first two basic Emergency Medical Technician classes with both classes graduating December 13th that same year.

In November of 1976, the first class of EMT-Intermediates graduated improving the level of care offered to the citizens of Surry County.  At that time pre-hospital care included initiation of IV’s, limited medication administration and hospital communications by a device known as an Apcor.

In July of 1980, Surry County EMS graduated its first class of Mobile Intensive Care Technicians, known today as EMT-Paramedics.   Surry County citizens could now receive even better pre-hospital care.  Additional skills allowed at this level included intubations, broader medication administration, defibrillation and cardioversion.  In 1989, Surry County EMS changed its name to Surry County Emergency Services.  It was at that time services has become more wide spread to cover Fire Service, Rescue, Haz-Mat, and High-Level Rescue training.

Today, Surry County Emergency Services offers approximately 71,000 citizens of Surry County and its visitors compassionate, competent pre-hospital care with skills such as: 12 Lead EKG Interpretation, Defibrillation, Cardioversion, External Pacing, Intubation, IV Administration, and even broader medication administration.  Surry County Emergency Services continues to provide Fire Service, Rescue, Haz-Mat, and High Level Rescue training and services while developing injury prevention programs aimed at reducing the loss of life caused by predictable, preventable injuries.
